MLA General Guidelines

  • Type your paper on a computer.
  • Double-space the text of your entire paper, and use a legible font (e.g. Times New Roman).
  • The font size should be 12 pt., and the same font should be used throughout the entire document.
  • Leave only one space after periods or other punctuation marks.
  • Set the margins of your document to 1 inch on all sides (top, bottom, left, right).
  • Indent the first line of paragraphs one half-inch from the left margin by using the Tab key.
  • Create a header with your last name and page numbers; number all pages consecutively in the upper right-hand corner, one-half inch from the top and flush with the right margin.

Formatting the First Page of Your Paper

  • Do not make a title page for your paper.
  • In the upper left-hand corner of the first page only, list the following four items: your name, your instructor's name, the course, and the date.
  • Center the title and use title case (standard capitalization). Do not underline, italicize, WRITE IN ALL CAPS, place your title in “quotation marks,” or change the font of the title.
